parchment paper and wax paper

Parchment Paper — Parchment paper is simply regular paper that has been coated with a layer of silicone. That silicone layer is what gives parchment paper some very special features. Firstly, it gives the paper its non-stick property, thus food doesn’t stick to it while baking. Secondly, parchment paper is heat resistant which means it can be used in the oven without burning. This is why you will see all bakers using parchment paper whenever they bake some cookies, cakes, or other sweet goodies.

In contrast, wax paper contains a simple layer of wax that is applied to normal paper. Plus, this wax layer is what makes it non-stick, so you can use it to prevent food from sticking. On the other hand, wax paper is not heat-resistant as in parchment paper. That means you don't want to use it in the oven or subject it to a high set temperature because it can melt or burn. Use wax paper for wrapping food or covering items that do not need heating.

How to choose the right paper for your baking and cooking needs

Before using either of these papers, it helps to know the differences — but knowing the differences is only half the battle, so here are the best ways to choose between these two types of paper for your cooking and baking needs.

Parchment paper should always be used when baking cookies; if you are making cupcakes or any kind of baked good that you want to be flat and level. For easy release from the baking sheet and for clean looking baked treats, use parchment paper.
